Practical tips for choosing where to stay in Grand Baie

Seafront or set back?

A place right on Grand Baie’s seafront offers great views and the convenience of having the beach two steps away, but it’s also noisier (traffic on the Route Royale, terrace bars) and more expensive. An apartment or villa set back 5 to 10 minutes’ walk often offers more peace and quiet for 20 to 30% less.

For couples who like to step out at night for a drink without being bothered by traffic, staying a little further back with access to a private or shared pool is often preferable.

Grand Baie beach vs Pereybere vs Mont Choisy

Grand Baie’s beach, in a sheltered bay, is ideal for watersports (waterskiing, parasailing, boat trips) and beachfront restaurants, but less suited to relaxed swimming for children. The sea can be slightly choppy there and the seabed isn’t always clean.

Pereybere’s beach is more family-friendly: a calm, shallow lagoon, fine sand. Families with young children will be better off in Pereybere than in Grand Baie itself, even though the two beaches are only 2 km apart.

Is a car essential in Grand Baie?

Grand Baie is the only area in Mauritius where you can get by without a car for day-to-day activities. Supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, excursion agencies, the beach — everything is within walking distance of the centre.

That said, to explore the island (Chamarel, Le Morne, Mahebourg, Blue Bay), a rental car is essential. Renting a car for 2 or 3 days during your stay (rather than for the days you spend in Grand Baie) is often the best economic compromise.

Airport transfers

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is about 45 minutes from Grand Baie. A private transfer from the airport costs between EUR 30 and 50 for a standard car. If you’re travelling as a group, a minibus can be economical. Taxis are available at the airport but are less cost-effective than transfers booked in advance.

When to book?

Grand Baie is the most in-demand area of Mauritius. In high season (July-August, December-January), good accommodation books up 3 to 6 months in advance. For villas with a pool, demand is even further ahead — some popular properties are booked a year in advance for July-August. Book early if you have a fixed date.

In low season (April-June, September-October), availability can often be found 4 to 6 weeks ahead, sometimes with 20 to 30% discounts.

Port-Louis: the Mauritian capital is 30 minutes by bus or 25 minutes by car. The central market, Caudan Waterfront, the Natural History Museum and the Champ de Mars are worth half a day. The bus from Grand Baie is cheap and convenient.

Getting around Grand Baie

Within Grand Baie itself, walking or the occasional taxi is more than enough. For trips further afield, several options can be combined depending on your budget and how much independence you want.

The bus serves Port-Louis and the main towns from Grand Baie at a very low cost, but journeys are slow and evening schedules aren’t very practical. Day taxis, negotiated directly with a driver or through your accommodation, are a comfortable way to visit two or three sites in a day without worrying about driving on the left. For travellers who want real freedom of movement, renting a car remains the best option, especially for reaching the wild south or the island’s interior in a single day.
